Today's Tech News and Reviews

It’s never been so important to consider the cleanliness of ourselves and the space we live in. To help prevent the spread of nasty viruses and bacteria, it is important to always wash our hands when we’ve come into contact with something foreign, as well as to sanitize the things we most frequently come into contact with. Some of these things we don’t spend a lot of thought on, like keys, wallets, smartphones, and so on. Objects we touch every day and never consider what could be building on them beyond what eyes can see.

To help combat this, products have been making their way to the market that make use of concentrated UV light to clean objects like these, without ever having to get them wet. Even if you do get them wet during the process of cleaning them by hand, some of these devices will even dry them for you as they dose them with that cleansing UV light.

One of these is the new Coral 3-in-1 UV Sterilizer and Dryer. Actually targeted for parents who are looking to make the process of keeping baby products sanitized easier than having to boil everything. In a world where more and more things are becoming an automated process, who has time for that? Well, if you plan to be a good parent, I guess you would make the time. However, saving time is still a bonus, and this device can help you achieve this.

Although it is targeted around baby products (ie, bottles, pacifiers, lids, stuffed animals, etc), it can be used to clean just about anything else using UV light. Hence, the opportunity to drop your keys and smartphone in there for the bath they deserve (and quite likely, need). As long as something can withstand a good dose of UV light (which was everything we were able to think of to throw in there).

We have covered similar solutions like this, but most of them were quite small and specialized in just one task. An example of this was the Phone Soap UV sanitizer. You really can’t clean much with them and they aren’t that fancy looking when it comes to expectations. Coral, however, looks like a UV pressure cooker. It offers all sorts of space to place items into, which greatly increases its value. You can dedicate to just baby products, or you can use it to clean everything else too while you’re at it.

There is enough space inside to place objects as tall as 7.1-inches (the max height per the instructions), which means you have a lot of options there. You place everything neatly into the container, making sure nothing is stacked, trying to separate everything as much as possible so the light can properly bath the object all around. There is even a small wire tray to help separate things with, that hands near the top (which can be added or removed as you wish).

Then you choose the option that you want to use. You can sterilize and dry in case you just washed the items by hand. Or, you can choose to just sterilize if water wasn’t part of the equation (ie, phone, keys, stuffed animals, etc). You can also just use the dry option and use it as a dryer.

Each of these options has various times that can be set depending on how long you press the touch-sensitive buttons. The sterilize & dry option can be taken from 40 to 70 minutes, each option including 10 minutes of UV and the rest to dry the items. There sterilize option by itself can be taken from 10 to 20 minutes. The dry option from 30 to 60 minutes,

There is also an option for 24-hour storage. This is for when you are using it to store baby bottles that are not actively in use. It will periodically come on the keep the items inside sterilized until you are ready to use them. It starts with a 50-minute sterilization and dry cycle and then kicks on for 2 minutes of sterilization time every 2 hours.

There is a HEPA filter located on the back to help make sure that the air being drawn in is clean when it hits the items inside. We can’t have dirty air contaminating our items as they are being cleaned, right? It lasts around 3 months or more depending on if you are using this every day or less often. Including the filter that comes installed, you get a total of 4 filters with the product.

There are two Philips UV-C bulbs within the inside of the lid portion that are protected from touch via a metal grid. These too will eventually expire like any bulb, and you would replace these. The bulbs last 12 months or longer depending on use. They include a small metal pry tool that is used to help pop the metal grid out so that the bulbs can be easily accessed.

Overall usage seems pretty user-friendly. No rocket scientists are needed for this and it can absolutely cut the time down spent cleaning everything when it comes to baby products. There is also no spilling freshly boiled water everywhere.

It also seems to be priced well based on competition and size. Going back to Phone Soap as an example, Phone Soap was a useful product, but it was expensive for how small and limited it was. The Coral sanitizer is around twice the price, but it is also about 20x the space inside. As for other products like it, the price fits in perfectly or just enough to make it better than some of the others (especially when it comes to size).

As for how well it works to kill all those nasty germs and bacteria, we don’t quite know. Not without taking it to a nearby lab so we can borrow a microscope (or buy one to have on-site, which would never be approved I’m sure). However, given that the science of cleaning an object with UV light is sound and quite a frequent practice in the medical world, I’d say that it has a lot of hope for success.

This also means that it could easily find a purpose for small business use within various industries where a business has a lot of little things that need to be sanitized in between uses. So from home to small business, this product has a lot of potential.

So keep yourself protected as the world works its way through the COVID-19 situation, while also protecting yourself and your children from all of the other viri and bacteria that surround us every day.

We will continue to play with it and let you know if we find anything else to point out. You might even see it pop up in another story in the near future as it gets its use.
